Challenger Center Colorado, with the financial support of the United States Air Force Academy, is hosting a LEGO® Simple Machines Design Challenge event for kindergarten through third grade. Educators may now apply to participate!
LEGO® Simple Machines are innovative, project-based engineering activities consisting of designing and building a machine according to a set of design criteria. Working in teams, students learn about robotics, problem solving, and engineering through designing, building, and testing their LEGO® Simple Machines. The project can be accomplished in a classroom, after-school club, or home school co-op. Additional information about LEGO® Simple Machines can be found on their website: www.legoeducation.us
The 2016-2017 Design Challenge will be an exercise in teamwork, problem solving, and creativity. Specifics of the competition will not be announced until the competition begins. Teams will have one hour to build their projects to specified goals and constraints. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each division. The competition for Kindergarten and 1st graders is scheduled to be held at Library 21c in Colorado Springs on January 24th. The competition for 2nd and 3rd graders is scheduled for January 25th, also at Library 21c. (UPDATE: There is a change in competition dates. Early simple machines competition will be on January 23 and Simple Machine competitions have been rescheduled to January 25 and 26, 2017)
Grants are available for qualified teachers and home school groups. Selected educators for the K-1 Division will be eligible to receive up to 8 Early Simple Machine kits and curriculum. Teachers who participated in previous Design Challenges are welcome to apply to receive additional kits; however, priority will be given to teachers who have not received the grant before. This year we will be introducing new kits for the 2-3 division. All teachers and home school groups, even if they have previously received our grant, are eligible to receive up to 8 new Simple Machine Kits (https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/simple-machines-set/9689). Teams in the 2-3 Division will not be allowed to compete with the Early Simple Machines sets used in previous competitions.
The LEGO® Simple Machines kit comes with curriculum closely aligned with Colorado state standards for primary grade students (see chart on the next page) in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Grant deadline has ended. Check back next year for more opportunities...
