The Challenger Learning Center of Colorado hosts a LEGO® Simple Machines Design Challenge event for kindergarten through third grade. LEGO® Simple Machines are innovative, project-based engineering activities consisting of designing and building a machine according to a set of design criteria. Working in teams, students learn about robotics, problem solving, and engineering through designing, building, and testing their LEGO® Simple Machines. The 2017-2018 Design Challenge was an exercise in teamwork, problem solving, and creativity. Specifics of the competition were announced on the competition evening. Teams had one hour to build their projects to specified goals and constraints. Awards were given for first, second and third place in each division.The competition for Kindergarten and 1st graders took place at Library 21c in Colorado Springs on March 5th, 2018. The competition for 2nd and 3rd graders occurred on March 6th and 7th, also at Library 21c.
The LEGO® Simple Machines kit comes with curriculum closely aligned with Colorado state standards for primary grade students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
