OPTIONAL iFly Session (Teachers not attending iFly should check in at 9:30a at Legacy Peak) All registered teachers are welcome.
Session I 10:00a-11:15a First Session for teachers not attending optional field trip to iFly. MEET iNDI - This session will explore how to better engage intermediate grade level students with computer science and computational thinking fundamentals using the indi robot. Sphero indi was awarded TIME Magazine's "2021 Invention of the Year" as well as many other "Best of STEM" awards. Indi works in classrooms of all levels because of its ease and simplicity for both teachers and students.PRESENTER: Layne Rainey, Sphero.edu THE SCIENCE OF SMELLS - During “The Science of Smells” session, we will take a fun and exciting look at why things smell and taste like they do, on a molecular basis. There will be hands-on (rather, noses-on) experiments that you can do in your classroom. This will be of particular interest to those of you who like to cook. If you attended last year’s “Chemistry Classroom Demonstrations” session, it will be the perfect lead-in to “The Science of Smells.” After this workshop, you will never think of smells in the same way again! PRESENTER: Dr. Ronald Furstenau, Stacy Lazzelle, USAFA Chemistry Department AIRPLANES IN THE CLASSROOM - Flash back to physics class for a primer on amazing aircraft, Isaac Newton, flight and fun ways to demonstrate and integrate these topics into your classroom. PRESENTER: Dr. Dave Kohlman, Challenger Board Member, Prof. University of Kansas (ret.) ROCK AND ROLL - Rock & Roll into the world of forces and motions! In this session, participants will use ideas from the Picture Perfect STEM Lessons to create their own lesson for their students which meet the Colorado Academic Science Standards. Our hands-on investigations will include marble runs, ramps with various surfaces, and balls of all types! You can literally have a "BALL" learning basic physic lessons for your own classroom. Teachers develop ideas for their classroom while making the science standards "bounce" in your classroom!! Lesson plan provided and many prizes for attendees. PRESENTER: DeLene Hoffner, EleSTEMary

Session III 1:45p-3:00p LEGOS AND MOTION - Learn all about the laws of motion using Legos. The LEGO® Education BricQ Motion Essential set engages grade K-5 students in the exploration of physical science within a sports context. BricQ Motion helps foster an understanding of forces, motion, and interactions by providing easy hands-on learning experiences without the need for technology. CHECK IN-8:15a-8:30a

Session I 8:30a - 10:00a WATER WONDERS - Learn about the local water system and conduct exciting experiments such as insta snow, cloud in a bottle, incredible water drop journey, stormwater soup, water cycle reader’s theater and plant adaptations in this fast-paced session provided by Colorado Springs Utilities. You get to keep the Springs Utilities’ Water Activities Teacher Resource Guide, which is a compilation of activities from teachers, other organizations and our own experiments that are easily implemented in the classroom, are effective at reinforcing academic concepts and leave a meaningful impact on students. PRESENTER: Birgit Landin, Education Specialist, Colorado Springs Utilities POWER OF THE PEG - The mathematical principles of circles work together with K-3 learners in this Math/Engineering focused series of activities. Reduced, reused, recycled materials engage out-of-box thinking; moreover the materials are cheap and open-ended. The experimental design comes from Pre-K, making the activities accessible, but with a high ceiling of creativity for older students. PRESENTER: Laura Weilert, BA., Early Childhood Teacher MESO - Join NSSTI (National Space Science Technology Institute) to learn about ways to engage your students in scientific inquiry and how to bring STEM to life through MESO – the Mobile Earth and Sun Observatory. This famed “science center on wheels” includes hands-on activities focused on earth and space sciences, renewable energy and scientific instrumentation. Teachers will learn all about how bringing this exciting piece of equipment to your school can reinforce STEM topics being highlighted in your classroom already. PRESENTER: Dimitri Klebe, PH.D CAVING, EXPLORATION & SCIENCE - Learn about cave-related science, exploration, and conservation with cave explorer, inventor, and educator Dave Jackson of CaveSim. You'll have the chance to put on a harness and ascend the 12-foot CaveSim tower, hoist fellow teachers up the tower, and participate in simple lab activities that you can do with your own students. We'll do exciting rope-destruction demos, and you'll go home with lesson plans and even materials for some amazing activities. RECOMMENDED: Dress comfortably! PRESENTER: Dave Jackson, Founder, CaveSim
